If your computer takes a solid two minutes to be usable after you hit the power button, odds are good the drive inside it is to blame. And the fix happens to be the most dramatic upgrade in computing right now. I'm not exaggerating.

There are two kinds of drives, and they're built completely differently. A hard drive, the old kind, is mechanical. Inside there's a spinning platter and a little arm that physically moves around to find your data, sort of like a record player. It works, it's cheap, it holds a ton. But all that moving takes time.

An SSD (solid-state drive) has no moving parts at all. Your data sits on memory chips and it finds anything just about instantly. Same job as the hard drive, wildly different speed.

Swapping a hard drive for an SSD is the closest thing to buying a new computer without buying one. Startup goes from a minute or two down to a few seconds. Programs open the second you click instead of making you sit there. The whole machine quits that "hold on, I'm thinking" feeling before every little thing. And since nothing's spinning, it holds up better when a laptop gets knocked around.

How do you know what you've got? If your computer is more than a few years old and feels slow everywhere, not just when you've got a bunch of tabs open, there's a real chance it's still on a mechanical drive. A newer machine that boots in seconds almost certainly already has an SSD.

Quick tie-back to Monday, because it trips people up. An SSD is still storage, not memory. It won't give you room for more open programs, that's RAM's job. What it does is make everything you open feel instant.
