The printer is on. The light is green. Windows says Offline.

Offline is a poor description for what is happening. Your printer is not offline. Your computer can't find it.

Here is what usually happened. Your printer connects over Wi-Fi. Your router hands out addresses. Reboot the router, lose power for an afternoon, swap the box when you change internet providers, and your printer comes back with a different address. Your computer only has the old address.

Nothing is broken. The address moved.

So work in this order.

Start at the printer, not the computer. Most printers will print their own network report from the front panel. Look under Settings, Network, or Wireless. That page tells you whether the printer is on your Wi-Fi at all, and it gives you the address it is using right now. If the printer cannot print its own report, stop. That is a different problem and the rest of this will not help.

Then the queue. Open your printers list in Windows, open the print queue, and look at the Printer menu. There is a checkbox called Use Printer Offline. If checked by accident nothing prints no matter what else you do. Clear any stuck jobs while you are in there. Windows queues print jobs in a single line. One stuck job at the front of the line stops everything behind it.

If these fixes haven't worked, removing ad reinstalling the printer is safe and corrects issues with the driver.

HP printers can be managed with the HP Smart app in the Windows Store. Brother printes have the Brother Print and Scan manager in the Windows Store. Both are free, and despite how hard they get you to sign up for an account, you don't need one to use the software.

If your printer is plugged in by USB and says Offline, none of the above applies. Try a different port, avoid usb hubs, and check the cables. USB printer cables fail, often with no warning.
