A fair number of the laptops I am asked to replace in August do not need replacing. They need one part and an afternoon. Before you spend $600 on new, it is worth ten minutes to find out which pile the old machine is in.

Here is the test I run.

Can it run a supported version of Windows? This is the first gate, and lately it is the one that stops people. Windows 10 stopped getting security updates last October (now extended to Oct 2027). Properly configured with extended security, it still could be a useful computer, but trying to run current or specialized software could be an issue. Windows 11 can be installed from scratch on some machines that cannot update from Window s10 to Windows 11, so it might be worth checking out.

Does it have a spinning hard drive? If it does, swapping it for an SSD is the single best thing you can do to an older laptop, and it usually runs around $200 for the part and the work. A tired six year old laptop with an SSD dropped in feels like a different machine. This is the upgrade that saves the most computers I see.

Can it take more memory? A lot of older laptops shipped with 4GB or 8GB and have a slot for more. Another 8GB makes a real difference for a kid running a browser and a word processor at the same time.

Is the battery shot, and is it replaceable? A dead battery is fine if the machine lives on a desk. If the kid needs to carry it and the battery is glued in, thats a bigger issue.

Of course, there is a point where reviving an old machine is just not worth it. Putting $200 of parts into a laptop worth $150 that still has a cracked hinge and a dying screen is throwing good money after bad. If the machine is too old for Windows 11, and needs other repairs, replace it. If it will take Windows 11, but the hinges or screen are broken, replace it. I will tell you when you have crossed that line, because it is your money and I would want to know.
