This week I wrote about something that causes a surprising amount of frustration for people: where files actually live on your computer.
Over the years I’ve noticed something when helping clients. Most people aren’t disorganized — they just never had the structure of their computer explained to them.
Once you understand the basic layout, things start to feel much calmer.
Your computer isn’t a junk drawer.
It’s closer to a filing cabinet. There’s a structure underneath everything — folders, user accounts, system areas, and increasingly, cloud services connecting it all together.
When that structure isn’t clear, it can feel like files are disappearing, duplicating themselves, or hiding in random places.
So this week on the blog I focused on explaining the map.
Here’s what I covered:
1. Your Computer Is a Filing Cabinet (Not a Junk Drawer)
I started with the basics — what files, folders, and drives actually are, and why understanding that structure makes everything easier.

2. Windows File System Explained: Where Your Files Actually Live
I walked through how Windows organizes files, what the C: drive really means, and which folders are meant for you.

3. Mac File System Explained: What’s in Your Home Folder
Mac computers look different, but the logic underneath is very similar. This post explains how macOS stores your files.

4. Why Your Files Appear in Multiple Places (Cloud Sync Explained)
This is one of the biggest sources of confusion today. I explain how iCloud, OneDrive, and Google Drive actually work — and why files sometimes appear on several devices at once.

5. How to Organize Your Computer Without Breaking Anything
I finished the week with a simple, safe approach to organizing files so your computer stays manageable over time.

If you’ve ever opened your computer and thought, “I know that file is here somewhere…”, this series should help.
Next week I’m going to continue the theme with something just as useful: how to find files quickly when you can’t remember where you saved them.
Because even a well-organized computer needs a good search strategy.

P.S. If your digital life feels more like a messy closet than a filing cabinet, sometimes a short walkthrough with someone who understands the structure can make a big difference.
