In thirty-six years of fixing computers, I have never once made a slow one fast by installing something that promised to optimize it. Not once. So when a program offers to "optimize" your PC, it is worth asking what that word is actually standing in for.
Strip the marketing off and "optimizing" is really five or six ordinary jobs. Here is the honest version of each, and whether it does anything on a computer built in the last several years.
Clearing temp files. Real, and mildly useful. Windows and your browser leave behind temporary files, and deleting them frees up space. It rarely makes anything faster, though. Space and speed are two different problems that get sold as one.
Trimming startup programs. This one helps. Every program that launches when you turn the machine on takes a slice of memory and a few seconds of your morning, and half of them do not need to be there. This is the single biggest thing most people can change themselves, and Windows lets you do it in Task Manager for free.
Registry cleaning. This one can cause problems. The registry is a giant database of operating system and program settings, and "cleaning" it means deleting entries a program is guessing you do not need. The upside is close to zero. The downside, the day it guesses wrong, is a computer that will not start. I do not clean registries by hand, and I would not turn a piece of software loose to do it on a schedule.
Defragmenting. If you still have a spinning hard drive, defragging helps a little. If you have an SSD, which almost every computer sold in the last ten years does, defragging does nothing useful and puts a bit of needless wear on the drive. While there are some specific files that benefit from being contiguous even on an SSD, no full-drive defrag is ever necessary.
Flushing caches. Mostly harmless, mostly pointless. Caches exist to make things faster. Clearing them just makes the next few minutes slower while they rebuild.
So out of the whole list, one job reliably helps, one is quietly risky, and the rest land somewhere between minor and theater. That is the part the word "optimize" is built to hide. It bundles the one useful thing in with the useless ones so the whole package feels like progress.
None of this means your slow computer is imaginary. Slow is real, and it has real causes: a failing drive, a full drive, too much loading at startup, or heat. Those are all findable. What will not find them is a button that says Optimize Now and reports back that it fixed 1,432 problems.
