The old computer is the loose end of every upgrade. The new one's set up, the files are moved, life goes on. And the old machine sits in a closet for two years because nobody's quite sure what's still on it or what you're allowed to do with it.
Let's close that loop. There are three steps, in order, and the order matters.
First, make sure the new one really has everything
Before the old computer goes anywhere, confirm the new one is actually complete.
Open the new machine and look, don't assume. Are the files all there, including the odd ones that hide outside Documents? Is the email showing years back, not just the last two weeks? Did the passwords come across? Is the printer set up? Are the paid programs reinstalled and the license keys somewhere safe?
Give it a week of normal use, too. You find the gaps by living on the machine, not by staring at it the day you set it up. Once you've genuinely used it for everything and nothing's missing, then the old one is safe to deal with. Not before.
Second, wipe it, and know what wipe means
"I did a factory reset" is where a lot of people stop, and depending on the machine, that's either plenty or not nearly enough.
Most computers sold in the last several years encrypt the drive by default. On an encrypted drive, a proper reset throws away the key, and without the key what's left is scrambled noise. For those machines, a factory reset really is enough. Your data isn't recoverable in any practical sense.
Older machines are the problem. If the computer has a spinning hard drive, the kind that whirs, odds are it was never encrypted. On those, a factory reset mostly just tells the computer to forget where the files are. The files themselves are still sitting on the platter, and cheap recovery tools can pull them back. That's fine if you're handing it to your daughter. It is not fine if it's going to a stranger, a donation bin, or the recycling center. Those drives need an actual wipe, software that writes over the whole thing, or the drive physically pulled and destroyed.
If you're not sure whether your machine was encrypted, that's worth two minutes to check rather than guessing. Third, pick its next life
Once it's genuinely empty, you've got three good options and none of them is the closet.
Donate it. Plenty of local outfits take working computers and get them to people who need one. Wiped properly, it's a gift and not a liability. Just don't donate a machine you only factory-reset if it had an old unencrypted drive, see above.
Hand it down. A machine that's too slow for your daily work is often perfectly good for a kid's homework, a guest, or a spare. Cleared off and given a fresh start, it has years left for lighter duty.
Reuse it. An old computer makes a fine second machine for one job. A media box wired to the TV. A dedicated spot for photo scanning. A backup destination that lives in another room. I get more life out of "obsolete" hardware this way than people expect, and I made the whole case in that old PC in the closet has one more career.
The one option I'd talk you out of is the closet. An unwiped computer sitting in storage is your data sitting unguarded, and it never gets safer with time. Deal with it while you remember what's on it.
