Most computer problems do not happen all at once. There are warning signs, and summer heat is one of the most common triggers. Here are five things to watch for.

1. Your fan is running constantly or louder than usual

Fans exist to pull heat away from sensitive components. If your fan sounds like it is working overtime or never really quiets down anymore, the machine is telling you it is struggling to stay cool.

A one-time burst of fan noise during a heavy task (a video call, a software update) is normal. Fan noise that never stops is not.

2. Your computer is hot to the touch

Laptops can get warm, but if the bottom is so hot it is uncomfortable to hold, that is beyond normal operating temperature.

Desktops are a little better insulated, but if you put your hand near the vents and feel very hot air blasting out, that's worth paying attention to.

3. It is slower than it used to be

This is the sneaky one. Most processors will automatically slow themselves down when they get too hot. It is a protective feature, but the side effect is a sluggish computer on hot days.

If your machine feels noticeably slower in the afternoon than in the morning, heat could be a factor.

4. It shuts down randomly

An unexpected shutdown is often the computer's last resort to protect itself from heat damage. If yours has done this more than once, especially during warm weather or after running for a while, take it seriously.

5. Programs crash or freeze more than usual

Heat makes components behave unpredictably. If apps are crashing or your computer is freezing up and a restart fixes it temporarily, overheating may be part of what's going on.

What to do

Start with the basics: make sure the vents are clear, the computer is in a ventilated spot, and give it a restart. Monday's post has the placement tips if you missed it.

If the problems continue after that, it is time to get it looked at. Persistent heat issues can lead to real hardware damage, and it is much cheaper to catch things early.

If your computer has been showing any of these signs, don't wait. Book a remote session and I can help you figure out how serious it is before it becomes a bigger problem.
