If your Wi-Fi has felt sluggish lately, you are not imagining it. A handful of things happen in summer that genuinely slow down your connection, and most of them have simple fixes.

More people, same pipe

Kids out of school means more devices on your network all day. Streaming, gaming, video calls, tablets, phones - it all adds up. If your internet plan was designed for a couple of devices and now you have six running at once, you are going to feel that slowdown.

The fix is not always buying faster internet. Start by looking at what is actually using your bandwidth. Streaming video in HD is one of the biggest consumers. If everyone is doing it at once, try lowering the video quality on services like Netflix or YouTube (usually in the Settings menu) to free up some headroom.

Your router might be getting hot too

Routers generate heat and can throttle themselves down to stay safe, just like computers. If your router is tucked in a cabinet, in a closet, or somewhere without good airflow, summer heat can push it over the edge.

Try moving it somewhere with more ventilation, away from direct sunlight, and not stacked under other electronics. If it has been a while since you restarted it, a simple unplug-and-wait-30-seconds restart can help.

Wi-Fi interference

More neighbors home in summer means more Wi-Fi signals bouncing around. Wi-Fi uses shared airwaves, and a crowded neighborhood can cause congestion.

One option worth trying: check if your router broadcasts on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. The 5 GHz band is usually less congested and faster, though it does not travel as far. Connecting nearby devices to 5 GHz and leaving distant devices on 2.4 GHz can help spread the load.

When to call your internet provider

If none of these help and your internet is noticeably slower than it used to be (not just during busy times, but all the time), it is worth calling your provider. It may be a neighborhood issue, an equipment problem, or simply time to look at your plan.
