The Kit goes out to everyone with paid plans on Monday (as well as anyone who registers for early access before the release), and there will be over seventy buttons in it. Here is the order I would press them.
One. Check drive health. First, always. Everything else is pointless if the drive is going. Read the drive's own report and it tells you whether the machine is sick or just messy. Clean, keep going. Not clean, skip to the end of this post.
Two. Check free space. Windows needs working room. A nearly full drive makes a computer slow in a way that has nothing to do with age.
Three. Look at what starts with Windows. Updaters for software you deleted. Things you installed once in 2021. Trimming it is the biggest safe speed win there is, and it is free.
Four. Run the system file check. Windows can corrupt its own files after a bad shutdown, and it does not tell you. It shows up later as things failing for no reason. This compares them against what they should be and repairs the difference. It takes a while. Start it and walk away.
Five. Confirm your protection is on. Defender, firewall, updates. Most "I think I have a virus" calls turn out to be something switched off months ago by a trial antivirus that expired.
That is the sequence. It will either fix the slowness or tell you why software cannot.
One more thing, and it is the only part I will push on. If step one warns you, stop. Do not run the rest and do not wait to see if it improves. Back up today. A drive reporting bad sectors is telling you it will fail, and nobody can predict the gap between the warning and the failure. That is why drive health is first on this list.
No backup yet? Set one up without the cloud. Warning already on screen: send me a photo and I will tell you straight whether it is urgent.
Members and the early-access list get the Kit Monday, August 24th. Everyone else September 1st. Get on the list at pcrescue.me/kit before Monday, $29 instead of $49, free with a paid Membership.

The First Five Things to Run
Here is the order I would press them in. You can do all five by hand today.
